There’s lots of exposed concrete preserved from the original 1950’s architecture, like here in the entryway. If you’re small enough—like a couple of kids I saw—you can pretend to test drive this vintage car.

Before it opened as a “concept mall” this year, Bikini Berlin was an office building and got its nickname because the third floor was always vacant, giving the illusion the building was split in two—like a bikini.

The hotel is more of an experience than just a place to sleep. It’s an all encompassing adult playground where you’ll never be bored: you can spend hours in the bar watching people (and the animals), hang out in the lobby and work, walk around the public spaces outside, or go next door to the new Bikini Berlin.

The best way to see Berlin is on a bike and the hotel offers free rentals from the beautiful German brand Schindelhauer. When you get tired of pedaling, there are also free Mini Coopers to drive around.

Everything is themed around the zoo, so for a hotel located in the middle of an urban area, it feels very lush, green and lively.

The vibe is egalitarian and casual—most everyone will feel comfortable here. That’s clear when you walk around and see stylish ladies from the West rubbing elbows with Kreuzberg’s (Berlin’s Williamsburg) creatives and tourists from all over.

The design is well thought out and fun, down to the record player in the lobby and the soap dispensers that urge you to “stop the water while using me!”

Berlin is not known for their service and you’re reminded of that at the bar. The hospitality everywhere else in the hotel/restaurant is great, so hopefully the bartenders are just working out the kinks.
