"A regenerative living system in the jungle "
Highs & Lows
-
The variety of classes from heart-centered communication to animal flow was incredible.
-
The community vibe makes you feel at home and ‘en familia’.
-
Regenerative practices. I was truly impressed with their integral, live-what-you-preach operations. The informative talks were educational and eye opening.
-
The sacred tree. It is the beating heart of this place, on quiet days you will see spider monkeys playing in it.
-
Musicians and artists-in-residence added a great creative edge to my stay.
-
Over the weekend there are not many activities.
-
After a few days, the restaurant menu felt repetitive.
-
If you love a hot shower after a surf or swim, sadly there is none. On the upside, you will get the benefits of cold water therapy.

Pre-Arrival & Arrival Experience
A very warm customer service. Upon arrival you are given a tropical mocktail and added to a community WhatsApp chat which includes everyone on the property at the time. This is used to share meals, experiences and make plans for excursions and volleyball games.

Future Forward
This was the highlight for me. Zunya redefines this area and offers a regenerative living system that sets the example. The project is still in its infancy, but its daily operations are exemplary. It has a strict zero-plastic policy, and its circular economy plan uses the by-products of specific processes to fuel others, thereby lessening pollution. For example, all rooms have dry toilets. The waste from the dry toilets, mixed with sawdust from the wood workshop, is composted for eventual use in the outer gardens and forests. At the same time, all the restaurant and kitchen food waste is lasagna style composted with Californian earthworms and crushed garden waste such as coconut pits, branches, and fallen palms. The compost feeds the orchard, fruit trees, and communal gardens. Zunya also supports two local schools. It was lovely to see the hotel staff participate in the classes on their day off and spend their free time at the property.
-
Music
With a constant flow of musicians-in-residence, the offer of live concerts is incredible. I was lucky enough to be there at the same time as Mike Rauss who was fantastic fun, both in his beatboxing workshops and in his multiple concerts.

The current buildings and landscaping was designed by the Zunya Team. New buildings and landscape will be designed by various Mexican architects Alberto Kalach, Tanat Studio, Macia Peredo Studio and Studio 11:11.
-
Health & Wellness
Included in the room rate is access to many different types of yoga (During my stay there was pranayama, vinyasa, hatha, kundalini and a handstand workshop), martial arts and natural movement classes. For extra charge there are other activities available such as breathwork and bike excursions. A massage service is also available.
-
Food
A delicious vegan breakfast is included for guests. For lunch and dinner the hotel’s restaurant ´Nula´ offers vegan cuisine and a well equipped communal kitchen is open to all guests.
-
Bar, Events & Nightlife
Nula has a well stocked bar and delicious cocktails. There are concerts by the musicians in residence every week. In truth this is a haven away from the busy nightlife of Santa Teresa.
-
Minibar & Retail
No minibar. The Luxury safari tents have a mini fridge. The Kimono robes are available to purchase.
-
Accessibility
There are no steps, but the paths are made out of gravel and sand so may be difficult for wheelchair access.
-
Pet Friendly
yes
-
Children
Yes, it is a very family friendly environment
-
Price
The room rates vary a lot to suit different budgets. The safari tents are expensive, but worth it. The other room categories are reasonably priced in the context of Costa Rica, the “Switzerland” of Central America, especially considering so many activities are included.

Hotel Location Zūnya, Puntarenas Province, Malpais, Costa Rica
Zunya is located in a beautiful private bay of Malpais in the Puntarenas Province of the Nicoya Peninsula. It is a short drive from Santa Teresa known for its surfing and nightlife, which also had plenty of clothing and food shops if you need anything. Zunya itself, happily for me, felt a world apart in a bubble of tranquility.
